  • EGS, the UK leader in spend management, is delighted to announce that its eInvoicing solution has helped Essex County Council to success at the 2009 Government Business Awards.

The council won the Local Government Procurement Award, presented by BBC newscaster Nicholas Owen at the prestigious ceremony at the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal FC.

The coveted prize recognised the project that could best "demonstrate better value to the taxpayer through an improved procurement process."

With Essex County Council, the evidence was overwhelming. The local authority is on course to save £2.5 million by managing hundreds of thousands of supplier invoices electronically through an EGS solution that provides the final link in its end-to-end, procurement process.

Thanks to eInvoicing, the council has also reduced off-contract spend by 80%, saving a further £700,000, as well as achieving greater visibility of transactions and spend data to enhance strategic decision-making.

Suppliers have benefited too. Companies of all sizes can submit invoices electronically in moments - and free of charge with the EGS solution. They get paid faster and can go online to check the payments themselves.

The solution enriched EGS's existing eInvoicing module with innovative ideas and capabilities that included OCR invoice-scanning and a bespoke interface for agency staff that integrated timesheets and invoices.

Commenting on the award, Nick Bell, Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director for Finance at Essex County Council, said: "I am delighted that the hard work and innovative practices of Essex County Council and EGS have been recognised by this national award. EGS have helped the Council save significant funds through improving processes and I look forward to working with them in this area further in the future."

Adrian Gibson, Business Development Director at EGS, added: "EGS is delighted Essex has been recognised for the pioneering approach they have taken to transforming their processes and for the acknowledgement that the IDeA:marketplace is integral to their success."
