The success of EGS in helping local authorities to make multi-million pound savings while protecting front-line services, has been highlighted in Public Technology.net magazine.
In a bylined article, Nick Bell, Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director Finance at Essex County Council, explains how his local authority is saving £500,000 annually with EGS by automating and transforming business processes.
As one of the largest councils in the UK, Essex spends approximately £800m each year on a diverse range of good and services.
“With a general election fast approaching, national politicians of all parties seem to be making headline statements about large-scale cuts in local government,” writes Nick Bell.
“Rather than thinking along the lines of traditional cuts, Councils must look for alternative ways of reducing costs. At Essex County Council, we’ve worked hard to address this critical issue over the past few years. As a result, we are seeing multi-million pound returns.
“We have automated both our purchasing, and more recently, our invoice processing systems, which saves our accounts payable teams from spending hundreds of hours each week in rekeying, processing and archiving paper-based invoices.”
Mr Bell also explains the success of EGS’s web-enabled trading for local suppliers, automation for agency employee timesheets, and the accelerated processing of paper invoices through enhanced scanning and character recognition.
Commenting on the article, Peter Whent, Chief Executive at EGS, said: “It’s a pleasure working with Essex County Council to pioneer many leading-edge solutions in business process automation. As Nick Bell says in his article: ‘Real innovation means looking at things differently’. With EGS, organisations can achieve major savings very quickly – without having to invest in new hardware or set up new departments."
